said the storm could intensify into a category two hurricane later this
afternoon or tonight.
*July 07, 2008*
First hurricane of 2008 Atlantic hurricane season forms.
Bertha, once a tropical storm, was upgraded
this morning to a category
one hurricane by the National Weather Service. The storm became the first
hurricane of the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season. According to a 5 a.m. NWS
weather
bulletin, Bertha is moving WNW at approximately 17 mph, and is
located near the northern Leeward Islands.
FEMA wants residents living in hurricane prone areas to get serious and be prepared now. The agency cited the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s May 22 prediction that projected climate conditions point to a near normal or above normal hurricane season in the Atlantic Basin this year. The first named storm of the season, Tropical Storm Arthur, developed on Friday, May 30th and moved slowly across the Yucatan. FEMA is reminding people that preparing for hurricanes are a shared responsibility.
